This keyhole arch sits just offshore at Pfeiffer Beach and is famous as the "purple beach". The Purple Sand comes from manganese garnet deposits in the surrounding hills that wash down to the beach, creating purple specks in the sand. The purple can be less or more intense at different times of the year.

Pfeiffer Beach is one of the top attractions in Big Sur. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Monterey County or perhaps indeed in all of California.

Pfeiffer Beach is hidden from California Highway 1 because there is no state park sign posted pointing to the beach. The locals, who love the beach, do not want visitors traveling on the road, and it is a bit of an effort with a single windy lane most of the way down to the beach. With the superb scenery and serene ambience though, it is worth the trip.
